Privacy Policy

BetterBuddy respects your privacy. This policy explains what stays on your device and what leaves your device through analytics.

The short version: your contacts, Screen Time selections, message drafts and check-in history are stored on your device. Separately, BetterBuddy sends anonymous product analytics to PostHog so we can improve the app. That analytics data does leave your device.

Information stored on your device

  • Contact names and phone numbers you choose during setup
  • Your Screen Time app and category selections
  • Your lock schedule, check-in history and app settings
  • Message drafts you write before sending through Messages or other apps
  • The name you enter for yourself during setup

We do not read, store or transmit the content of messages you send. Messaging and calling happen through your phone's own apps, such as Messages or Phone.

Analytics (PostHog)

We use PostHog, a third-party analytics service, to understand how people use BetterBuddy, especially during onboarding and subscription, so we can improve the product and marketing.

What we send to PostHog:

  • Anonymous usage events, for example onboarding started, a step viewed, onboarding completed, paywall viewed, subscription purchased or restored
  • Non-identifying choices you make in setup, such as age bracket, referral source, daily phone hours, how many contacts or apps you selected, and your lock schedule preset
  • Whether you allowed notifications
  • A random anonymous ID created on your device (not your name or Apple ID)
  • Standard device and app details PostHog may collect automatically, such as app version and device type
  • Approximate location inferred from your IP address by PostHog, such as country or region (not precise GPS location)

What we do not send to PostHog:

  • Your name
  • Contact names or phone numbers
  • Message content or drafts
  • The specific apps you chose to lock

Permissions

  • Screen Time: used only to lock the apps or categories you choose until you check in
  • Notifications: optional reminders about check-ins and when your chosen apps lock
  • Contacts: used only when you pick someone to check in with. Contact data stays on your device.

Data retention and your choices

Analytics data is kept according to our PostHog project settings. If you reset onboarding in the app, your local settings are cleared from your device. To stop analytics on a fresh install, delete and reinstall the app.
